Asbestos air monitoring measures the concentration of asbestos fibres in the air. It is carried out to HSE guidance HSG248 and is used for several purposes: background testing before work, reassurance and leak testing during and after work, personal exposure testing for workers, and the clearance air test that forms part of the four-stage clearance after licensed removal.
Fibres are counted using phase-contrast microscopy and the results are assessed against recognised benchmarks: the control limit of 0.1 fibres per cubic centimetre over four hours for exposure, and the clearance indicator of 0.01 fibres per cubic centimetre for reoccupation testing. Clearance air testing after licensed removal must be carried out by an analyst who is independent of the removal contractor.
Identify why monitoring is needed: background, leak or reassurance, personal exposure, or clearance.
Air is sampled on site to HSG248 using calibrated equipment.
Fibres are counted by phase-contrast microscopy.
Results are compared against the relevant recognised limit.
A report is issued, and for clearance it supports the certificate of reoccupation.

If your Exeter property was built before 2000, there's a real chance asbestos is hiding somewhere in it. Left alone and in good condition it's usually low-risk. Disturb it during building work, though, and it becomes dangerous, and for many materials it's illegal to handle without a licence.
That's where we come in. The specialists we work with handle air monitoring across Exeter to the highest safety standards, surveying, removing, testing and disposing of asbestos properly, with full documentation on every job. Licensable work is carried out by HSE-licensed contractors, as the law requires.
